Navigating the Galaxy
Charts, surveys and how the map gradually fills in.
The Galaxy Map
Open Galaxy › Galaxy Map. The view draws all two million stars at once. Pan with click-drag, zoom with the scroll wheel, and click any star to open its detail panel.
Galactic structure
- Reach. The disk is 45,000 LY in radius — 90,000 LY from rim to rim — measured from the galactic core.
- Spiral arms. A compact central bulge and four spiral arms carry most of the stars, with a thin halo scattered across the whole disk. The bulge is dazzling, the rim is sparse.
- Density taper. Star density falls off with distance from the core: about one system in ten sits in the bulge, within 6,000 LY of the centre, and the arms thin out steadily toward the rim.
- Soft rim. The edge is not a hard line. The arms and the halo fade out around 45,000 LY, and a few stragglers lie beyond it.
Discovery vs. Survey
- Discovered — a star is "charted" the moment any of your fleets passes through or near it. Charted stars are visible on your map and can be re-targeted.
- Surveyed — a Research Ship survey mission reveals every orbit in the system: planet types, asteroid belts, moons, anomalies. Required before colonisation.
The System View
From the map, click a star and choose "Open System". You'll see the three orbital rings, a list of slots, and any colonies or stations you own there. If the system is unclaimed and surveyed, a Claim button appears — provided you can deliver a Colony Ship.
System names
Every system carries a catalogue name: SYS- followed by a seven-digit number, for example SYS-1234567. The thirteen imperial capitals are named after their empire (KAVRETH PRIME), and warp-gate hosts read GATE SYS-….
